Mogador, The City

Its history begins in the VIIth century B.C. The Phoenicians arrive while going further south in Africa. Later, the Romans built a purple dye production center, which will later give its name to the Purple Islands, off the coasts of Mogador.

In order to counter the growing Agadir, Sidi Mohamet Abdallah decides to fortify the city of Mogador in 1764. The task of building the ramparts is given to the French architect Théodore Cornut.

Pleasant and inspiring, the city of Mogador has attracted Moroccan poets, scientists, craftsmen and artists from as early as the XVIIIth century. It remains one the greatest active centers of contemporary Moroccan art. Forever protected by the alizés (trade winds), drowned in a sea of flowers, it is a olfactory symphony, thanks to the large variety of wood essences still used by the local carpenters.
